10 Comic Book Movies That Actually Deserve Remakes

1. The Spirit

Gabriel Macht has led one major movie in his career (No, SWAT: Firefight doesn’t count), and for that movie to be The Spirit is a travesty. He’s a decent supporting man and does good work on Suits, but quite why he was trusted up against Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson in this genre busting comic book adaptation is a mystery.

Added to a woefully miscast lead, the experimental comic book art style more recognisable from Sin City makes this an even harder sell. Robert Rodriquez was a good enough director to juggle the gimmick and make it seem natural; Frank Miller is a genius storyteller, but couldn’t really pull it off in the same way.

That’s not to say the movie doesn’t have its positives. Johansson’s deep voiced delivery has never fit a role better, and there’s a fantastic sequence where Jackson giggles as a cat dissolves. The premise of a detective coming back from the dead to protect his city is strong too.

However, these are outweighed by Macht’s blandness and the story wanting to be fun and campy one minute then broken glass gritty the next. There’s definite potential for a complete reboot, as long as they tread carefully.
