10 Comic Book Movies That Completely Ignored The Source

7. The Mask

The Mask Sssssss.......mmmmoookin! Ah, 90s Jim Carrey! Yes, believe it or not, this movie was based of a short-lived Dark Horse Comics series. The movie is actually pretty good, but because of the content nature of the comic, stuff had to be adjusted for the younger viewers. While the powers in the movie were largely cartoonish, the comic book powers are significantly more violent and disturbing. For one thing, in the comic, whoever wears the mask loses all social inhibitions, not just become €œslightly€ unhinged like Jim Carrey did. Picture the wearer as an actual sociopath with the ability to bend reality. Scary stuff, I know. Also, although Stanley Ipkiss is the protagonist of the movie, in the comics he only wears the mask for a short period of time. The basis of every written Mask series usually had a different wearer putting on the mystical face. This works for comics, but regular audiences might have understandably been put off by not having a clear protagonist. Though I liked this movie, I could see them remaking it as a hard R movie horror film if the comic storylines were more closely followed. Something to think about, Dark Horse.
