7. Blade (1998)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 54% Blade may have paved the way for bigger success stories like Spider-Man and X-Men in the years following, but it wasn't particularly well-received when it landed in 1998, and today its reputation still remains rather divisive. Still, a mere 54% for a dark, gory and kinetic powerhouse of a film like this one? It makes no sense, especially given how outright entertaining Blade is from the very first scene right up to the final moments ,where our hero - a perfectly cast Wesley Snipes - stands in the snow positioned like a badass, and then draws his sword as the screen cuts to black. The film itself, unfairly treated by critics, is a great exercise in style; the opening scene which depicts a vampire rave - complete with sprinklers that spray blood over the dance floor the moment the song drops - is pure '90s brilliance in its use of fast editing and frantic music, whilst the fight scenes are over-the-top but remain a thrilling watch. The best thing about the movie, though, is that it doesn't look down on the source material. It plays things relatively straight, an uncommon occurrence in comic book films at the time. That's not to say the film, made strictly for an adult audience, doesn't have a sense of humour: it toys with a sense of knowingness but doesn't disrespect Blade's origins.
