10 Comic Book Movies That Don't Deserve To Be Rotten On Rotten Tomatoes

6. From Hell (2001)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 57% The problem with From Hell is that the source material is so darn good: Alan Moore's epic, seminal work is a tome of bonafide genius, whilst the movie adaptation - courtesy of the Hughes Brothers - is merely a competent horror film. Viewed as a separate entity, though, and this rendition of From Hell - which stars Johnny Depp as Detective Frederick Abberline, a Victorian lawman on the trail of Jack the Ripper - is a gripping mystery made interesting by a rich and intoxicating atmosphere. Heather Graham might have been miscast as a prostitute love interest, but everyone else - from Ian Holm to Robbie Coltrane - give memorable performances. Sure, Depp plays Abberline in a far campier fashion than the character depicted in Moore's source material, but one could argue that the actor's decision to go down this route made for a more interesting screen interpretation. We've seen countless grizzled detectives, after all, but not quite as many of the drunken dandy variety. It's a fun take. Purists have a right to be peeved at this adaptation, but, faithfulness aside, From Hell is a far smarter and more effective procedural than its middling reputation suggests.
