10 Comic Book Movies That Failed To Live Up To The Hype
10. Watchmen (2009)
Watchmen was an admirable attempt to capture the genius of Alan Moore's seminal graphic novel - one that proved itself far too complex and dense to render in a two and a half hour film. Director Zack Snyder arguably produced the best movie possible, given the overall circumstances, but that doesn't mean that there wasn't a backlash as far as audiences were concerned - the hype levels for the film were noticeably huge, after all. But, as this article sets out to prove, hype is a dangerous thing. It should have been expected, then, that half of the audience, unfamiliar with the source material, would end up feeling lost for much of Watchmen. The other half, of course, were die-hard fans, and though Snyder changed very little in adapting the comic to the screen, they were peeved at those aspects that he did change (the ending, for example, is spectacularly different). And yet the biggest problem with Watchmen is that it's too faithful; in his attempt to rigidly follow Moore's work, Snyder ends up rendering a Watchmen that feels flat, unable to breath, smothered by its own agenda to be true to the panels of the comic. It's a shame, because his heart was clearly in the right place, but it just wasn't worth the hype.
