10 Comic Book Movies That Failed To Live Up To The Hype

5. Kick-Ass 2 (2013)

For a lot of people, Kick Ass probably came as something of a surprise; a hilarious, self-aware superhero movie that both embraced and mocked its genre, featuring a foul-mouthed pre-teen and Nicolas Cage in a performance that one might consider to be - brace yourself - actually funny. It was one of the best films of 2010, no doubt, and given that it was a box office smash there was little doubt that - one day - a sequel would come along. Kick-Ass 2, sadly, emerged as nothing but a cynical copy of the first film - a film so nasty in its execution and tone that it genuinely made you wonder why you liked the first movie in the first place. Because everything great about the first chapter falls entirely flat in Kick-Ass 2: there's no sense that it's a satire or a parody or a deconstruction. Instead, the violence leaves a sour taste in your mouth, whilst the jokes have an obnoxious, grating edge. Perhaps it was silly to think that Kick-Ass might ever warrant a sequel in the first place; that a follow-up - even one starring Jim Carrey - could be anything other than a futile effort. It's a major shame, all things considered, because the film seemed to have a lot going for it. Instead, it's the very definition of a movie that nobody will remember in two years' time.
