Herbert West, Re-Animator, started (his own) life in a short story by horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. In 1985, the tale was adapted by Stuart Gordon into the classic gore film Re-Animator. This, in turn, proved popular enough to spawn two sequels and a minor horror icon in Herbert West. While his star has waned in recent years, that hasn't stopped him from resurfacing in a number of comic books during that time.

First appearing in an adaptation of the movie, Herbert then got a prequel from the same publisher (Dawn of the Re-Animator, 1992) before lying relatively dormant until his crossover with the Evil Dead's Ashley Williams in Army of Darkness vs Re-Animator (2005). A one-shot and another crossover followed, before the good doctor finally got his own miniseries in 2015's Re-Animator, by Dynamite Entertainment.

While West rests for now, there's no telling when or where a man of his talents might pop up again. Not quite Re-Animated but... Re-Illustrated, if you will.
