10 Completely Misunderstood Movie Villains

1. The Joker in The Dark Knight (2008)

Terrorist or Freedom Fighter? Heath Ledger's Oscar-worthy performance as The Joker in Nolan's The Dark Knight will never be forgotten in cinematic history! The Joker€™s aim is to use the method of fear to gain obedience and power from others. He may arguably feel the forceful obedience gained is a sense of respect, as opposed to being referred to as a freak. His game plans raise a sense of alarming terror as many people in our society fear death, which is why we take personal precautions on a daily basis to avoid danger. As The Joker refers to his encounter with Batman as €˜an unstoppable force meets an immovable object€™, this contradictory image expresses the polar differences between the characters, whilst hinting the underlying irony of their ideal association; just as a cure needs a cause. Therefore, the paradoxical relationship between Batman and The Joker raises the issue of the cyclic nature of war and violence in our society. We are always fighting for peace, but unfortunately the concept of peace and its existence in reality is questionable. If we lived in peace and unison there would be no hero, no villain, no cultural differences, and no democracy. Whether his immoral methods of acceptance are purposefully performative, or simply a display of freewill as a response to traumatic childhood experiences is continuously debated by cinephiles today. So there you have it... 10 Completely Misunderstood Movie Villains! If you feel there are any other cunning character who deserve a mention please let us know below.

As a one-of-a-kind twenty-something film fanatic and culture vulture... I have a 1st Class Honours degree in English Literature with Film Studies & Media Cultures. Along with recently completing MA by Research in Film Studies, I aspire to be a film critic and yearn for the opportunity to roll around on the red carpet (with or without Christian Bale in his Batsuit). Always openly embracing films of all genres and nations, although anything Studio Ghibli related will always have a place in my heart. Believes normality is overrated!
