10 Completely Misunderstood Movie Villains

2. Raoul Silva in Skyfall (2012)

From a national hero to an international villain, Javier Bardem's unnerving portrayal of Raoul Silva (later known to be Tiago Rodriguez) in Skyfall was brilliantly executed. Classic case of the fallen angel who felt betrayed by the person he used to be in awe of (in this case commanding officer Judi Dench as 'M'). The scene that made my heart melt and sympathise with the cyber-terrorist was when he revealed his disfigured face from a suicide attempt involving cyanide to rid him of the torturing agony that followed his betrayal from M. Even when he finally captures M he pauses and shows his awry affection towards her. By attempting to kill himself in unison, his questionable actions suggest he would prefer to be with her in the afterlife. His moment of weakness emphasised his yearning for justice from the security system he used to personally protect.

As a one-of-a-kind twenty-something film fanatic and culture vulture... I have a 1st Class Honours degree in English Literature with Film Studies & Media Cultures. Along with recently completing MA by Research in Film Studies, I aspire to be a film critic and yearn for the opportunity to roll around on the red carpet (with or without Christian Bale in his Batsuit). Always openly embracing films of all genres and nations, although anything Studio Ghibli related will always have a place in my heart. Believes normality is overrated!
