10 Convoluted Movies That Ruined Great Ideas

1. Terminator Salvation

Terminator Salvation Terminator Salvation is convoluted largely as a result of the act it had to follow. Time travel in films is a thorny thicket at the best of times, all the more so when you're dealing with a series that keeps changing its own continuity. With Terminator 2, Judgement Day had seemingly been averted, and there was nothing left to worry about, until a third film was announced and it was decided that, hey, they didn't stop the fateful day, they just postponed it. By the time we reach Salvation, set when John Connor is a middle-aged man (Christian Bale), the whole timeline is just a bit of a mess. John is listening to the tape recordings of his mother, but given that she died before they realised Judgement Day had been repositioned - and therefore their entire perspective on the nature of time wasn't quite right - doesn't this seem kinda ridiculous? And that's the main problem with Salvation - other than the fact that, you know, it's overly self-serious nonsense - that it ends up tripping over the tricky narrative chicanery of the whole franchise to date.
