9. La Strada
The translation to English is literally "The Road" so there's no way this film wasn't going to make the list. Federico Fellini was a master of the Italian neo-realist style of filmmaking and his directorial prowess is on full display in La Strada. This film is one of his most underrated but it is one of his most accomplished in terms of straight storytelling. It may not bear the striking imagery of masterworks like Le Dolce Vita or 8 1/2 but it still has its share of "Felliniesque" moments. Fellini was always making films that were semi-autobiographical, 8 1/2 being the most obvious example, but La Strada is his most personal. He has stated that he felt closest to the characters in this movie and that it was his most challenging to make. That alone make sit required viewing for anyone who loves Fellini but also anyone who is a fan of deeply personal and emotional films.
