8. Rain Man
Dustin Hoffman had given many career defining performances but his role as Raymond in this movie is one of his absolute bests. The chemistry that Hoffman shares with Tom Cruise really helps to elevate what could have been a pretty limp wristed melodrama into a very emotionally resonant movie about family and brotherly love. Like Hoffman, Cruise also gives one of his best performances in his illustrious career. Rain Man proves that Cruise is much more suited for dramatic roles and really makes me wish he would return to them more often. The pace of the movie is also another highlight here. The narrative never falls into tedium which is a problem that many road movies often encounter. The story is simple yet resonant since it has a solid combination of great storytelling and brilliant acting.
