6. The Shimmer - Annihilation
Science Fiction talks a lot about humanity terraforming other planets, but what if some unknowable cosmic being decided to do something similar to US? This is what the team of scientists that make up our main cast find out when they investigate the mysterious entity known as The Shimmer.
Simply put, it's another world being made right on top of ours. Rewriting everything inside its area of effect, from plants, to animals, to people, on a sub-cellular level. As you can imagine, it kinda sucks nuts to be stuck there for long periods of time. The team that our heroines are searching for all went some form of crazy or died in various horrific ways due to just being there for too long. And like them, all but one of our heroines meets the same fate.
The Shimmer is Lovecraftian horror perfected. An unknowable, incomprehensible space that mankind was never meant to cross paths with, that isn't outright malicious, but is nothing but harmful to humans through its very nature. Really chilling stuff.
