10 Coolest Sci-Fi Movie & TV Worlds
5. Bajor - Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
The biggest problem with Star Trek's universe is that, aside from a select few races and planets, you never really figure out that much about each planet you visit. Here be a thinly veiled allegory planet, there be a one note alien society that revolves around a single concept and little else etc.
Meanwhile, one of the many reasons people love Deep Space Nine is because it centers its entire premise around one single planet and its many cultures, conflicts, fears, prejudices, and slow social progress. That planet is the newly annexed by the Federation Bajor, formerly of the Kardassian Empire.
Bajor had spent the past several generations under the totalitarian rule of the Kardassian Empire, so as you can imagine, much of Bajoran culture that we see throughout the show revolves around responding to that rule and how it's affected the populace. But as the show goes on, we see Bajor rebuild its heritage and culture and its people finally begin healing from the horrors they'd witnessed. Bajor was a fascinating world to explore, and hopefully a future Star Trek show will give us a much needed update on this world and its people since last we saw them.
