10 Cosmic Horror Films To Scare You Into Oblivion

4. From Beyond

The Void
Empire Pictures

From Beyond is one of the whackier films on this list, but that’s to be expected from a 1980s cosmic horror.

Loosely based on the Lovecraft novella by the same name, From Beyond explores what it would take for humans to perceive other dimensions.

Again, we’re back to the idea of a horrific truth. The truth revealed in From Beyond is that there’s a whole manner of creepy crawling abominations right under our noses – our brains just haven’t evolved enough to see them. The idea that something could be staring into your eyes without you even knowing it is enough to make your blood run cold.

The horror is taken further when the character’s newly evolved brain and his perception of the other dimension begins to change him into something grotesque and other. ‘80s gore runs rampant and the viewer is treated to squishy, melting bodies galore.

The breakdown of the biological forms in From Beyond is a metaphor for the breakdown of the mind. The terrifying theories in cosmic horror films consistently turn their characters insane, and writers of the genre (such as H. P. Lovecraft) have been known to suffer from mental illnesses such as depression.

But its not all doom and gloom. There’s an array of spooky creatures to keep any monster fan happy: flesh-eating bees, giant worms, and interdimensional eels all grace us with their disgusting presence.
