5. James Bond Almost Ends a Cinema Manager's Marriage

We're used to seeing James Bond steal people's wives in the films, but one real-life husband very nearly lost his own wife as a result of 007.

Following the overwhelming success of Goldfinger, the demand for the next film in the series Thunderball had reached the stratosphere. There were toys, aftershaves, even branded shoes and raincoats.

It's not surprise then that Thunderball grossed $142 million worldwide, a huge figure for the time and not too shabby nowadays when you adjust for inflation. The fourth Bond was a must-see and the gala premiere in London had to be run twice in response to demand for tickets.

Whilst in New York, one studio cinema went to extraordinary lengths to meet the demands of Bond.

The Paramount Theater in New York decided to run Thunderball for twenty four hours a day in order to accommodate the huge crowds who wanted to see the film. It got so bad that the manager's wife threatened to divorce him as he hadn't been home for days.

Sadly, Thunderball was the last film for the Paramount, they closed their doors soon after and the cinema auditorium was converted into office space.
