10 Crazy Lord Of The Rings Theories And Why They Might Be True

6. Shelob Is Immune To The Power Of The Ring

When Gollum decided once and for all that he wanted Frodo and Sam dead, he could have gone about it in a number of ways. However, he settled on leading them to Shelob, so that she could feast on them before he took his Precious back from Frodo's corpse.

But why would he choose such a method that could have easily seen the Ring of Power fall into the possession of another? Whilst feeding on Frodo, would Shelob not have felt the same pull and temptation most every other character felt at the sight or proximity of the Ring?

Gollum isn't stupid, and surely wouldn't have made such an error in judgement, so does he know something the audience doesn't? The only plausible way Gollum could send the Ring to Shelob knowing she wouldn't want it for herself is if she is immune to its power. This, like Tom Bombadil, makes her potentially very dangerous.

There is a theory that the Ring holds no power over her because she genuinely doesn't crave power. Most others in Middle-earth do, whether that is the power to do good or to do evil, but Shelob just wants to kill and eat. Ironic then that the Ring would have made things so much easier for her.
