Of all the villains throughout Middle-earth, Boromir is one of the most complex. He is uneasy around the Ring to begin with, and wanted to use its power for himself, but his turning on Frodo was never truly his own doing. He was corrupted by the Ring.

However, there were many, many people at the Council of Elrond, and a Fellowship of eight other characters, none of whom were affected quite like he was. This could, in theory, be because none of these other characters handled the shards of Narsil in Rivendell like the favourite son of Denethor did.

When Boromir found the legendary blade he picked it up to inspect it, and in doing so cut himself on the still sharp edge. This was the same edge that cut Sauron's fingers from his hand so many years ago, and as it kept its bite, could it have kept a trace of Sauron's blood as well? Is this what set Boromir off on the dark path he took?

At the start of this scene, he was relatively friendly towards Aragorn, but after cutting himself on the blade he became noticeably more hostile towards his King. Was this the moment that doomed him to corruption and villainy?
