10 Crazy Movie Sequels That (Thankfully) Never Happened

6. Indiana Jones 3 Almost Had A Monkey King & Indy Coming Back From The Dead

If, like me, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull left you wishing they'd left it at three movies, it's still interesting to look back at Indy's cancelled adventures; the sequels that, for one reason or another, were deemed to be unsuitable and subsequently tossed out.

And given how crazy some of them are, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull does end up looking somewhat tame in comparison to a few - even with its alien antics. At least, that's when you compare it to "Indiana Jones and the Monkey King," a failed sequel to Temple of Doom that never made it out of the script stages, penned by writer/director Chris Columbus.

In Columbus' film, Indy goes to Africa, stumbles upon a lost city, and ends up battling Nazis and looking for the Fountain of Youth. In the process, he fights a Monkey King - an actual monkey who is a king - and even gets killed, before returning to life after eating a magical peach. Yes, a peach. Also in this film: Indy rides a rhino into battle, and there's a Nazi with a super-powered metal arm.

Spielberg actually liked this script, believe it or not, but ultimately passed because he felt "too old" to direct another Indy flick and moved onto more serious fare like The Colour Purple, Empire of the Sun and Always.

Monkey King, wacky as it sounds, obviously wouldn't have been better than Last Crusade, which was essentially an "Indiana Jones: Greatest Hits" package, but in the best possible way. It's a good thing this one went south.
