10 Crazy Movie Sequels That (Thankfully) Never Happened
2. Se7en Almost Had A Sequel Called Ei8ht About A Psychic Det. Somerset Solving More Murders
Se7en isn't a film that naturally suggests a sequel; it's difficult to imagine how to spin the events following its bleak finale into a follow-up film. But this is Hollywood, of course, and they're not bothered about things like "logic" - if a movie does well, then a sequel can be fashioned out of nothing.
Still, you have to wonder how the hell they imagined that audiences would ever embrace a motion picture called "Ei8ht," which would have featured Detective Somerset (Morgan Freeman) on the trail of another killer - but not as we know him! That's right: Ei8ht would have revealed that, oh, Somerset is actually psychic, by the way, and so now he must use his psychic abilities to, like, track down an even worse murderer than the one in the first film. Without Brad Pitt.
You can imagine how David Fincher reacted when he heard this idea. He pretty much poo-pooed the idea that he'd ever return to the director's chair for a sequel, claiming that the script, which was originally penned as a standalone film with no ties to Se7en, made no sense on a fundamental level.
Bizarrely, Ei8ht was later made into an underwhelming film called Solace, starring Anthony Hopkins as the physic detective. It flopped and was met with critical distain, because of course it was.
