10 'Creatively Different' Film Castings

6 - The Nutty Professor (Eddie Murphy)

Given the fact that the original Nutty Professor (1963) is a parody of Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr. Jekkyl and Mr. Hyde, I think its no surprise that the next iteration would taken an even further step away by casting Eddie Murphy as a hugely obese professor looking to be fit and skinny. This entry also serves as a place mark for older stories and characters to be re-told in more progressive times with a broader base of diversity, such as Jaden Smith stepping into the Karate Kid remake. Or Halle Berry turning in her worst performance ever in Catwoman (2004). Or Samuel L. Jackson filling the role of Nick Fury throughout the cinematic Marvel Universe (Ultimates, yes, I know). Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. But just be glad that we're no longer in an age where Mickey Rooney and John Wayne can be cast as Asians. Be very glad.
