3. The Shrunken Head Scene In Under Capricorn
While not known as a thriller, Hitchcock's second colour film Under Capricorn holds one particular scene which will make even the most solid of individuals jump out of their skin. The film is typically classed as a murder mystery involving a love triangle; set in Australia, the story follows the growing alcoholism of unconventional heroine Henrietta, and the roles of the two men in her life, Sam Flusky her husband, and Charles Adare who helps her gain back her confidence. While the emotional turmoil of all three characters is what really brings the film to life, a sub plot involving Henrietta and Sam's housekeeper is what sparks off the shocking scene with the shrunken head. The housekeeper Milly is secretly feeding Henrietta alcohol in the hope that she will destroy the marriage and be able to claim Sam for herself. Milly hides a real shrunken head under a sheet in Henrietta's room: the poor woman then finds it in a scene which induces screams from watching audiences. The head is disgusting, and the revealing of it comes as a real shock both to Henrietta and anyone watching the film. The point of the act is to induce hallucinations in Henrietta in order to bring on madness (Millie is later discovered trying to kill Henrietta, and leaves in disgrace).

I love Stephen King and music festivals; I eat my toast upside down; I daydream about getting married probably a bit too much; and I wish every day for a pet sausage dog puppy (who never materialises – sob).
