10 Creepiest David Lynch Characters

3. Frank Booth (Blue Velvet)

Twin Peaks Little Man
De Laurentiis Entertainment

Blue Velvet is one of David Lynch's most critically acclaimed films. The story of crime in suburbia, it follows Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) as he sinks deeper into the dark underbelly of the idyllic town of Lumberton.

The man behind the darkness is Frank Booth, a gas-huffing, profane crime boss who kidnaps, murders, and God knows what else. We first meet Frank when Jeffrey sees him abusing singer Dorothy Vallens, cutting her clothes with scissors, dry humping her, and then beating her, all the while mewling that she is his mommy. This is only scratching the surface of Frank's depravity, though. As Jeffrey becomes more entangled in Frank's organisation, we see how sociopathic he truly is. He seems to confuse emotions, with joy repeatedly leading to violent anger. He kills without remorse, and it is implied that he rapes Jeffrey.

Frank is truly one of the most unhinged and frightening characters in all of film, and Dennis Hopper's mesmerising turn really should have earned him an Oscar nomination. He loses himself in Frank, so that character and actor are indistinguishable. It is easy to forget that you are watching a performance as opposed to a man truly committing the atrocities Frank does, so convincing is Hopper's performance.
