The most frightening monster is the one that lies within. This is part of what makes the demonic creature known affectionately as "Pumpkinhead" so eerie. Horror movies are rife with mindless, unstoppable killing machines, and on the face of it Pumpkinhead somewhat fits this genre. A rural chap named Ed wants to avenge the accidental but avoidable death of this young son, so he travels deep into the hills. Here he seeks out a witchy woman who tells him how to bring forth a demon of vengeance that will seek revenge on those responsible for his son's murder. Pumpkinhead then sets about to disposing of the teens who were involved in the boy's death. What sets this guy apart from the pack is the fact that he is (spoiler) not technically a demon at all, but is the disfigured form of the last person to summon the spirit of Pumpkinhead. Part of the steep price you pay for using his services is that you are cursed to become him next time around. It doesn't hurt that the lead character Ed is played by horror veteran Lance Henriksen. His performance, as well as some fantastic practical effects, helps to draw out what is truly horrible and spine-tingling about this unique creature. It's probably best to just ignore the three sequels though.
