Parents often look at movies as "the babysitter," the story that will play in the background for them, but will keep their child enthralled for the length of a cup of coffee, a quick nap, or something even more... adult.

Sometimes, however, those same parents don't watch a children's movie to see what is actually happening in them, and they inadvertently create years of nightmares for a child unprepared for a surprise moment in a movie that no one was expecting.

These ten films represent some of the most shocking, surprising, disturbing moments that popped up in the most seemingly innocuous of places, kid-friendly animated and family film. Proceed at your own risk...

10. The Tarantulas - Something Wicked This Way Comes

Large Marge
Disney

Perhaps we should have expected to be scared by this adaptation of beloved author Ray Bradbury's haunting YA story about a small town and the odd carnival that comes to visit them with gifts and offers too good to be true. But it was a Walt Disney film, so it couldn't be too scary, right?

Not so much. There are plenty of things to frighten a child in this movie: the carousel, the dust witch, the funeral march, and the list goes on.

The most intense scene for young ones, however, might be the one where two young boys are surrounded by an army of tarantulas on the windows, walls, floor, and even the doorknob (as one boy finds out too late).

This sequence by itself makes Arachnophobia look like amateur hour.
