It seemed like a children's film. Written by Roald Dahl, famed for his children's stories, and it even had an adorable character who has been turned into a mouse. What a fun, delightful children's adventure this will be!

But no one told us that Nicolas Roeg, the creator of the waking nightmare that is Don't Look Now, was the director. Or that most of Roald Dahl's children's stories were thinly disguised Grimm fairy tales with as much of the macabre as it had of the comedy.

Even knowing that, though, couldn't have prepared audiences for the impact of the reveal of witch Angelica Huston's true appearance. Ragged and pockmarked, half-avian and half-melting candle, the witchy visage would continue to haunt children for years after.
