10 Creepy Movie Moments That Gave Us Nightmares As Kids

5. Maleficent

malefi In the 1959 Disney classic Sleeping Beauty, the new parents King Stefan and Queen Leah hold a shindig for the entire kingdom to welcome their daughter into the world. Flutes play. Three colorful fairies come to offer their best wishes and the gift of beauty and song. And apparently in the 1950's we were still cool with a pair of parents deciding that they'll force a boy to eventually marry the zero-day-old the party's being held for. Though I don't know why Prince Philip seemed so pissed, the girl was given the gift of beauty. Then, out of nowhere, a black dragon-shaped witch appears, angry at her lack of invitation and on the hunt for revenge. For the audience, the abrupt change from a cheerful party to a scorned monster condemning an infant to death is pretty shocking. Of course, if you live in the world of Sleeping Beauty, it shouldn't have been so surprising. She's the most powerful being in the country. Did they really think that she wouldn't hear about the party that the entire rest of the kingdom was going to? Just invite her for chrissake. What's the worst that could happen? She drinks too much, awkwardly asks Uncle Bob about his wife who just left him, and maybe she hooks up with one of the older page boys. Big whoop, it's definitely preferable than her killing your child.
