With six Oscar nominations and incredible critic reviews, Spotlight is one of the most highly acclaimed films of the past decade. The biographical drama film directed by Tom McCarthy tells the story of The Boston Globe’s “Spotlight” team and their attempts to investigate the child sex abuse in the city from Roman Catholic Priests. The film itself is based on the Pulitzer Prize winning stories published by the team in the early 2000s and features an ensemble cast that includes Mark Ruffalo, Stanley Tucci, Rachel McAdams and Michael Keaton.

The film, while critically lauded, received major backlash from those involved with the church who claimed that it does not accurately represent how the sexual abuse cases were dealt with. Mainly, people believe that Spotlight was flawed for not including priest rehabilitation and psychologists reassurance that they could be safely integrated back into the church. Furthermore, many of those depicted in the film were not happy with the ways in which their actions were represented.

Spotlight tells the kind of important and emotive story that will always get people’s backs up but despite the criticism, the film impactfully gives insight into the kind of scandal that needs to be in the public domain.
