9. Never Let Me Go

Kazuo Ishiguro's dour, futuristic novel was never going to be a laugh riot, but somehow director Mark Romanek managed to craft an adaption that along with keeping to the novel's quasi-sci-fi premise - in the future human life is prolonged and kids are cloned for the purpose of being organ donors - breathed life into the themes being explored in the novel.

Snagging what in 2010 was a holy trinity of hot talent in Keira Knightley, Andrew Garfield and Carey 'where's my Oscar?' Mulligan, the period elements of the film, where Mulligan's Kathy H recalls her time at boarding school with her pals, are exquisitely shot with the loneliness and soul searching themes of the story pairing up with expansive shots of Clevedon Pier and the British countryside.

But, despite getting rafts of strong reviews, and the good money being put on potentially all three stars landing Oscar nominations, awards glory wasn't to be with the movie not even snagging a BAFTA.
