10 Criminally Underrated Monster Movies
1. Lake Placid
What else could the number one spot on this list go to, if not the only feel good killer crocodile film ever made?
An amazing cast and David E. Kelley’s sharp script make 1999's under-appreciated Lake Placid, a fish-out-of-water comedy meets creature feature, a genuinely inventive and under-appreciated gem.
The film benefits from an incredible monster (Stan Winston's work, naturally), and an ensemble cast including a stoic Brendan Gleeson and hammy Oliver Platt as a taciturn deputy and eccentric philanthropist respectively. But it's the chemistry between Bridget Fonda's straight-laced city girl palaeontologist and Bill Pullman's gruff, snarky sheriff which makes this one an absolute delight.
Well, that, and the gory attacks, the tense and scary scenes, the Betty White cameo. You know, the typical monster movie necessities.
