10 Criminally Underrated Monster Movies

5. The Burrowers

Relentlessly downbeat and all the scarier for it, S&Man director JT Petty’s terrifying, bleak period western remix of Tremors is a must-watch for fans of monster movies, western flicks, and ambitious genre mash ups.

Following a small band of settlers as they face off against both indigenous people and the eponymous burrowers, this flick takes on tough questions of colonialism and deconstructs the American ideal of Manifest Destiny through the terrifying titular monsters, a murderous species which subsisted on buffalo before humans hunted their food source... and have since switched to the other white meat for their new diet.

Tense and thoughtful, this one should have catapulted Petty to mainstream fame upon its 2008 release.

Cathal Gunning hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
