10 Critical Darling Movies That Were Shot Dead At The Box Office
9. Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas (1998)
The purest and most excellent adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's work and likeness to date. Terry Gilliam's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas took Tim Burton's Ken doll and the world's indie darling, Johnny Depp, shaved his head, stuck him in a loud shirt and a bucket hat, and made the kind of undiluted filmic drug trip that only comes along once or twice a generation.
As Thompson's close friend, Depp was uniquely placed to replicate the man's speech and gestures, and he put in an outstanding performance, adding in the kind of comical exaggerations that made the source material so compelling.
But, if the box office is anything to go by, audiences didn't agree. Despite Depp's relative star power, the film made under $14 million worldwide, stalling far short of its modest $18 million budget.
Nonetheless, the picture has since become a cult classic, with a dedicated following - so much so that it has made it to the Criterion Collection and a new Arrow Video 4k restoration has been released on Blu-ray this year.
