10 Critically Acclaimed Films That Struggled At The Box Office

2. The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford (2007)

Grindhouse Quentin Tarantino

Comfortably in the running for one of the longest and most unwieldy film titles in recent memory, "The Assassination" (as we will refer to it from here) was released in 2007, and is a Western that revisits the interactions between Robert Ford (among others) and their outlaw gang leader, Jesse James.

In reality, Robert and his brother joined the James gang and eventually agreed to hand him over to authorities for a reward and a promise of immunity. Allegedly, James became suspicious and eventually entirely aware that they would turn him in, and was not surprised when Robert shot him in the back of the head before collecting on his "prize".

With an approval rating of 77%, The Assassination is another film that received award nominations aplenty and found itself in numerous top ten lists but failed to make its costs up by half, grossing $15 million against $30 million and that is including over $9 million in home release revenue.

Although its run-time did definitely work against it given that it clocks in at 160 minutes, a two year delay between filming and release hampered it further and it was never going to bring in the numbers it had to.
