10 Critically Acclaimed Films That Struggled At The Box Office
1. Children Of Men (2006)
Often used as the poster child when it comes to great films that struggled financially, this 2006 retelling of the P.D. James novel holds an approval rating where 92% of all professional critics gave it a favourable review.
As with other entries, it was nominated for numerous awards, won several and was voted in 13th place in a list of the best hundred movies of this century. While it brought in $70 million, it cost an alleged $76 million so it technically lost money.
In a dystopian world where infertility has become widespread, Clive Owen plays the role of Theo, a former activist, who leads a small group including a woman that is revealed to be the last pregnant female on earth across the United Kingdom.
The world is split into factions and amongst the desolate landscape, there are moments of true hope and unshakable humanity in amongst the despair and the seemingly endless hopelessness.
The author of the novel was said to be happy with this remake, even praising the changes it made (the men were infertile in the book, but this was changed to women in the film) but it seems a shame that the paying public couldn't match this enthusiasm that everyone else felt.
