10 Critically Reviled Action-Horror Movies (That Weren't Actually That Bad)

9. Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters

Van Helsing 2004
Paramount Pictures

Releasing in 2013, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters followed a wave of films that were putting twists on classic stories. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter being a key example. What makes Hansel and Gretel stand out however is the chemistry between the two leads. Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton make a great duo, both hilarious and endearing.

Some of the different twists that this film introduces are quite unique and interesting as well. For example, Hansel is diabetic due to all the sweets that The Witch forced on him as a child. This then fuels both of their disdain for all witches, eventually leading to conflict between the two due to the introduction of a good witch.

Famke Janssen is at her best in this film as the evil Grand Witch. She delightfully chews the scenery and makes for a compelling antagonist for the duo. The action is also quite distinct as well, working almost like a video game where our heroes have to defeat the witches through their specific weaknesses.

The whole film has a very unusual steampunk vibe, and this style alone deserves to save it from monster movie mediocrity.
