Critics Consensus: "Mired in its muddled mythology, Terminator: Genisys is a lurching retread that lacks the thematic depth, conceptual intelligence, or visual thrills that launched this once-mighty franchise."

Released in 2015, Terminator Genisys was seen as the way of reinvigorating the declining Terminator franchise. Instead, it just became one of the many failings responsible for that decline. And it's a shame - a real shame - because the premise was the most innovative and refreshing thing the Terminator franchise had attempted since T2.

Terminator Genisys' main problem lay in the fact that it got so caught up on the freshness of its concept, it outsmarted itself and ultimately left audiences feeling a little confused. But that doesn't mean it's bad per se, just too convoluted for any one feature film - and one of the many reasons why the Genisys concept would have worked so much better as a TV series.

That said, if you can understand the overwhelming time-travel logic (or just simply roll with it), Genisys is actually one of the more enjoyable offerings of the post-T2 franchise. Oh sure, it's more Terminator-for-kids than sci-fi thriller, but it's one heck of an ambitious ride that takes place across multiple decades and it's worth it alone to see Arnie back living his best life as a grumpy aged T-800.
