One of the possible factors as to why Guardians of the Galaxy has connected with audiences so successfully is that it comes from a subcategory of sci-fi storytelling that has been little seen since the halcyon days of the video shop, for want of a better categorisation; The Space Adventure Team-up. Most of the films that Guardians shares its DNA with were made in the 70s and 80s, or snuck away on TV in the 90s and early 00s. The good thing is theyre all out still out there waiting to be discovered, and if you find yourself Jonesing for that off-kilter brand of sci-fi that can shift effortlessly from high sci-fi concepts to not taking itself too seriously then the following article is a good place to start. One film you won't find here is Howard The Duck (similarly there is no mention of The Racoons... Sorry Rocket fans). After Thanos and the Collector, Howard is the only character in Guardians to have previously appeared in live action, and though there is a lot of derision aimed at his eponymously titled debut it can be watched on B-movie terms to gain much enjoyment - but this list concentrates specifically on those films and TV shows that will scratch the Guardians itch At least until the DVD release.
