After what seems like a millennia trapped in Mongos version of development hell, the producers behind the problematic Flash Gordon reboot now have an even greater adversary than Ming The Merciless in their midst, in having to craft something that doesnt suffer too greatly in comparison to Guardians of the Galaxy, which is a film that comes closest to capturing the unabashed fun of the 1980 version of Flash. Guardians has completely and utterly beat them to it, and despite being entirely its own animal, it does feel like the punk remake version of the Flash Gordon story. It will be intriguing to see how apparent the influence of Guardians will be in the new Flash Gordon film, which in the wake of Guardians success is more likely to finally see the light of day, at least in comparison to its chances in the wake of John Carter. Before we see a Guardians influenced Flash though it is worth revisiting Mike Hodges 1980 cult classic, at a time when Sci-fi was becoming aesthetically and tonally serious, Hodges unleashes the camp, and for all its cheesy glory Flash Gordon is as joyous and experience you can have with a film, much like Guardians of the Galaxy.
As well as the odd article, I apply my "special mind" to scriptwriting for Comics, Films and Games... Oh and I cut down trees, I skip and jump, I like to press wild flow'rs, I put on women's clothing, and hang around in bars.
