10 Cures For Your Guardians Of The Galaxy Withdrawals

7. Red Dwarf

It would be sacrilege to write an article concerning space-faring misfits and not include our very own, in the form of the hapless crew of the mining ship Red Dwarf. It is fair to say that in Red Dwarf€™s long history there has been a certain inconsistency in quality, but it can€™t be accused of leaving the concept to go stale. By expanding the initial budget-restrained €œsitcom in space€ Red Dwarf has become a show that has addressed and parodied the grandest of sci-fi concepts, and as in evidence by the meta approach of the Dave produced mini-series it is clearly a show still willing to explore new ideas and visit different genres. Aside from a slobbish reluctant hero as its protagonist and a disparate crew, what Red Dwarf shares most with Guardians of the Galaxy is its propensity for humour, an obvious observation given that Red Dwarf is principally a comedy, but in a genre where laughs are sometimes hard to come by (compare how much you chortle whilst watching Battlestar Galactica) Red dwarf is the perfect way to plug into that sense of fun that Guardians does so well.

As well as the odd article, I apply my "special mind" to scriptwriting for Comics, Films and Games... Oh and I cut down trees, I skip and jump, I like to press wild flow'rs, I put on women's clothing, and hang around in bars. Follow me on Twitter @DrRobertOtnik
