3. The Ice Pirates
Out of all the entries on this list none come as close to laying the tonal foundations of Sci-fi/comedy/adventure seen in Guardians of the Galaxy as much as The Ice Pirates. It may have a much heartier helping of corniness and effects that are decidedly BBC Micro in comparison to Guardians PS4 but it has to be assumed that when creating the film James Gunn would have had Ice Pirates in mind as the kind of fun sci-fi filmmaking Guardians would be a return to, and Ice Pirates is nothing if not fun. Another film to arrive in the wake of Star Wars and consequently termed a rip-off Ice Pirates at least tries something tonally different by layering in sexually themed innuendo and comedy without descending into Flesh Gordon territory. Also worth seeing solely for the sight of a young Ron Perlman (was he ever young? he looks the same!) in full space pirate mode, complete with headband and earring.
