10 Current Directors Who Just Can't Seem To Miss

Like Marty, the matter of whether QT is a current director or not could be up for debate given the length and breadth of his career - but what's hard to dispute is that he's put up three brilliant films in the past decade alone that rank among his strongest efforts to date.

His first two of the period offer a diametric study in how to craft a modern-day western. Django Unchained is a revisionist revenge pic, powered by a propulsive, almost punkish attitude as it unfurls with a frenzied fervour; The Hateful Eight meanwhile constructs a gloriously gonzo chamber piece, ratcheting up the tension of its stand-offs up to eleven.

And then there's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, perhaps his warmest outing behind the camera to date. It's a surprisingly affectionate, rose-tinted ode that mostly sidesteps his penchant for explosive violence to unusually powerful effect. Tarantino says he will make only one more film before retiring - with a Stark Trek adaptation of all things once mooted - but whenever he does hang up his camera, it will be a sad day for the movies.

Something of a culture vulture, Mr Steel can historically be found in three places; the local cinema, the local stadium or the local chip shop. He is an avowed fan of franchise films, amateur cricket and power-chords.
