10 Current Directors Who Just Can't Seem To Miss
3. Denis Villeneuve
Filmography: Incendies, Prisoners, Enemy, Sicario, Arrival, Blade Runner 2049
The French Canadian was bestowed with the honour of Filmmaker of the Decade by the Hollywood Critics Association at the end of last year and it's not hard to see why. Over six films in the space of seven years - all of his entries on this list were released between 2010 and 2017 - he has emerged as one of the medium's supreme talents, proving himself a new-age master of the thriller.
All of his features bar Enemy have been nominated for Academy Awards - and that was somewhat buried by having the misfortune to come up against his other work of 2013, Prisoners. After the devilishly taut Sicario put him further on the map, he backed it up with two of this generation's most cerebral sci-fi works in Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, with the latter managing to somehow live up to decades of expectations in delivering a follow-up to an all-time sci-fi great.
He's set to follow it up with the mother of all projects - a two-part adaptation of the famed sci-fi novel Dune, which he has filmed with an all-star cast including Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac and Josh Brolin, among others. Can he succeed where David Lynch failed?
