1. The Day the Clown Cried
No unreleased film in history is as controversial or talked about as Jerry Lewis' mystifying The Day the Clown Cried, which starred Lewis as a despondent, German clown named Helmut Dorque, who after insulting the Gestapo, is thrown in a concentration camp. Here he tasks himself with entertaining the children and distracting them from the horrors that await them in the gas chambers, in a move that be considered hugely daring now, let alone when Lewis sought to make the film in 1972. What's perhaps most disquieting is the sheer effort put into the film by Lewis, only for it to be shelved; he reportedly lost 40 pounds for the role, and spent a significant amount of his own money to get it finished when financiers refused to pay up. When he couldn't come to terms with his partners about financials and the release of the film, it was indefinitely canned, with the only remaining VHS reportedly existing in Lewis' office, locked away. Furthermore, Lewis refuses to discuss the film in interviews, and has been known to get cantankerous when asked. Are there any other cursed movies we missed? Let us know in the comments below.
