The Texas Chain Saw Massacre concludes with Sally Hardesty (Marilyn Burns) gingerly escaping from the chainsaw-wielding Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen) with the help of a passing trucker (Ed Guinn), who throws a wrench at him, knocking him to the ground.

The delicious irony of the trucker's quick thinking, though? As Leatherface falls to the floor, he drops the chainsaw onto his leg, which it immediately starts slicing into, much to his understandable anguish.

It's an extremely realistic-looking moment - especially the sundered flesh visible beneath Leatherface's trousers - which combined with the film's infamous seat-of-the-pants production, led many to believe that Gunnar Hansen actually fell over and cut his own leg for real.

But this wasn't what happened. Rather, Hansen wore a metal plate over his leg which was then covered with meat and a blood bag, allowing him to make contact with it without harming himself.

In theory, anyway.

While shooting this sequence - which was the final scene shot for the movie - Hansen ended up burning his leg due to the friction of the chainsaw contacting with the metal plate.

And so, the screams Leatherface makes during the scene? Completely genuine on Hansen's part.
