10 Dark Moments In Disney Animated Films

7. The Demolished Village - Mulan (1998)

Mulan was a well-loved film, and the fan base has only grown stronger since its release in 1998.

With characters bursting full of personality and expression, it fast became a favourite of many and a fantastic retelling of the Chinese legend.

I don't think I need to mention the fantastic vocal performances the film, particularly Donny Osmond as General Shang, and Lea Salonga as Mulan. But there was a moment that is often overlooked sang by the army - featuring in the song A Girl Worth Fighting For.

This jolly number which is used to quell the rational anxieties of the soldiers by giving them motivation to fight for the women back home, and discuss their dream girls. However, this happy song is interrupted by the sight of a village razed to the ground by the Huns, and serves as a bleak reminder that the film is about war, and shows the true brutality of their opponents.

Mulan herself finds a child's doll amongst the still-smouldering ruins, implying that even children were massacred in this attack.

What's also revealed, is that the unit that arrived before General Shang was also slaughtered, leaving no survivors -the ranks of which included Shang's father. Chien Po retrieves the fallen leader's helmet, as the music haunts the imagery.

Another point that's often overlooked is that after this scene, there are no more songs in the entire film. Whether this was a conscious decision or not, tonally it makes a lot of sense as the darkest imagery can't always be brightened by a musical number.
