10 Dark Moments In Disney Animated Films
2. The Brave Little Toaster (1987)
This is a really messed up film.
A film that many of you may not have heard of, and even less have probably seen, The Brave Little Toaster acts as an allegorical tale and a condemnation of modern societies disposable nature, without any concern for sentimentality.
That being said, in this film there is suicide, torture, and copious amounts of death.
A great example is an air conditioning unit killing himself in a blind rage as he is unable to move like the rest of the household appliances. The imagery of this is actually scary in itself without the grisly demise attached to it. We also see a flower die of loneliness, as it can't find anything to love but it's own reflection in the titular toaster.
Other examples include the chop shop - where the owner strips down other appliances in a scene that puts Hostel to shame. The character Lampy willingly getting struck by lightning, the vacuum cleaner going insane and eating his own chord, and Toaster's nightmare of an evil firefighter clown brandishing a fork and a hosepipe are all equal parts weird and undeniably traumatising.
One particular scene that is definitely worth mentioning is in a junkyard, where the group are chased by a magnet. The giant machine picks up used cars and drops them onto the conveyor that brings them to the compactor, all the while they are singing about how they are now worthless, and you see the pained expression on their faces as they are killed.
