2014 wasn't the best year for horror fans, with the usual suspects like Annabelle proving to be generic, toned down fare which failed to deliver any real thrills. One exception was the Australian supernatural horror movie The Babadook, which reminded viewers how creepy horror can be when it is done well. The Babadook itself is a strange otherworldly entity which seems to reside in a mysterious pop-up book, discovered by a troubled child in the home in which he lives with his anxiety and grief-ridden mother. As she struggles to cope with her son's erratic behaviour, the Babadook's presence becomes even more noticable, shattering the fragile relationship between mother and son. While it contains more than a few spooky moments, perhaps the most twisted scene involves the mother attempting to pleasure herself in bed with a vibrator, before long her son walks in and interrupts her, serving up a perverse twist on every teenage boy's worst nightmare.
