10 Darkest Moments In The Marvel Cinematic Universe
7. Steve Visits Peggy - Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Captain America: The Winter soldier improved on its predecessor in every conceivable way, from the action and writing to the pacing and intensity.
And it didn't get much more intense than a conversation between Peggy and Steve early on in the film.
Still coming to terms with his place in the modern world and lamenting the past life that he will never be able to reclaim, Steve visits old flame Peggy Carter, now an old woman in poor health, as she lies in a bed in some type of nursing home.
Watching the two discuss their history - and realizing they'll never be together - is hard enough, but it's all capped off with the revelation that Peggy is suffering from Alzheimer's, as she appears shocked to find out that Steve is alive, despite having spoken to him for a good few minutes.
It's virtually impossible to not get a lump in your throat as Peggy begins to well up, unable to contain her sadness at the fact they've been apart for over fifty years, while Steve, who is feeling the exact same thing, contains his grief and remains strong so as not to reveal to Peggy that they've already been having a conversation.
It's devastating to watch, and explores the concepts of love and loss more subtly than you'd expect from a blockbuster action flick.
