10 DC Characters That Deserve Animated Films

3. Batgirl

Batgirl There have been several Batgirls since the character's introduction in 1961, though Barbara Gordon has undoubtedly become the most iconic. Barbara was created in 1967 to boost the ratings of the 60's Batman television show, though it ultimately failed to save the show from cancellation. She debuted in Detective Comics #359 titled "The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl!" by writer Gardner Fox and artist Carmine Infantino. She's the daughter of police commissioner Jim Gordon, has a doctorate in library science and works at the Gotham City Public Library. She gained popularity and served as Batgirl from 1967 to 1988, when she retired from crime fighting before being shot through the spinal cord by the Joker in the famous graphic novel, Batman: The Killing Joke. The gunshot wound left her paralyzed, and she then took up the role of Oracle, who acted as a computer expert for Batman and various other heroes. When DC relaunched their entire line with The New 52, they put Barbara back in the batsuit by recovering her from her paralysis, a move that sparked debate amongst fans and comic creators alike. Barbara Gordon was ranked 17th on IGN's Top 100 Comic Book Heroes, and has enjoyed immense popularity since her initial debut. She's had a long history of appearances in television and other media, including the Batman television show, various animated series, the failed Birds of Prey live action series, the now infamous film Batman & Robin, and in a handful of video games including LEGO Batman and Injustice: Gods Among Us. She's also had a significant cultural impact, and has been the subject of academic analysis and has often acted as a talking point regarding women's role in comics, violence against women, and those living with disabilities in mainstream media. There are endless possibilities for a Batgirl animated feature, though most fans would immediately jump on board for a direct adaptation of The Killing Joke. Because of her immense popularity and status as a cultural icon, a movie of her own would be a surefire hit.
