10 DCEU Revelations From Zack Snyder
7. The Spear
One of a great many questions fan had about Batman's plan for fighting Superman in Batman v. Superman was why the world's greatest detective chose to use what little kryptonite he had to make a spear. He could have just as easily made kryptonite bullets or gauntlets, but instead, he chose to make two smoke bombs and a spear.
Well, you're on your own for figuring out the symbolism of the smoke bombs, but Snyder has answered why the spear was so crucial to the plot and it returns to a well he's drawn heavily from for all of his DCEU films. Throughout Man of Steel, Snyder went out of his way time and time again to equate Superman to Jesus in overt ways. And here, the spear is also representative of a Christ metaphor.
In the Bible, after Jesus was crucified, a Roman soldier drove a spear into his side to ensure that he was, in fact, truly dead. On social media, Snyder posted a picture of a painting, depicting this very incident with the caption:
"Why with all the technology at his disposal would Batman build a spear... here's why".
